A team of Researchers from University of Rwanda-College of Agriculture, Animal Sciences and Veterinary Medicine (UR-CAVM) composed of Dr. Sylvestre HABIMANA, Dr. Saidi RUMANZI MBARAKA and Dr. Alphonsine MUKAMUHIRWA in partnership with Enterprise URWIBUTSO SINA Gerard and the Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resource Development Board (RAB) have been testing the adaptability of rice crop in Rulindo District. The research was presented to different partners in Agriculture sector at Nyirangarama on 16th December 2021.
The objective of this research is to introduce rice cultivation in the higher altitudes areas of Rwanda, which are usually cold compared to other rice growing areas of the country. This research has started off with Rulindo district in the Northern Province where among the 55 rice varieties tested at Nyirangarama in Bahimba Marshland, only 5 varieties were able to provide good growth and yield.
Mr. SINA Gerard, the Owner and Managing Director of Ese URWIBUTSO, in his remarks he applauded the researchers for their efforts on introducing rice production in Rulindo through research. Previously, he had tried to grow rice in the same marshland but it could not bear grains. Mr. Sina like many other people thought that rice could not grow to full maturity. He further emphasized the importance of rice in Rwanda since it is consumed by the majority of the population. “I have to travelled in different places of the world but there is no country which does not consume rice” said Mr. SINA Gerard
UR-CAVM Principal was represented by Dr. Fabrice MUSANA who is the Head of the Department of Crop Sciences. Dr. Musana indicated that this achievement was part of the mandate of University of Rwanda, which are : Teaching and Learning, research and community outreach. He further said that the research on rice is expected to help the population in Rulindo district but also expand to other cold regions of the country. Dr. Innocent Ndikumana, the head of rice program from Rwanda Agricultural and Animal Resources Board (RAB) indicated the need for more efforts in value addition of rice.
After speeches from different attendees, participants went for a field visit to the rice trials in Bahimba Marshland, Rulindo. The event was embraced by the Mayor of Rulindo District Mme Mukanyirigira Judith who greatly appreciated the research on rice so far. She further indicated that the district is ready this research further and explore other marshlands in Rulindo district.
